I spent 30 years working in advertising agencies, where new business is part of everyday life; clients tender their business on a regular basis – as often as every 3 years. So you spend the first year bedding the client in, the second building the relationship and the third preparing to defend the business in the next pitch.

Even in these circumstances, new business pitching in agencies is not as efficient or effective as it could be. I could see this was the case in pretty much every one of the more than 50 countries that I worked with around the world. So, I worked with some partners to devise and run an international programme that trained dozens of senior people to improve new business performance. We became the fastest growing agency group in the EMEA region for the years 2017-2020.
