Trustee
Over the past couple of years my thoughts had increasingly begun to turn to how I could use my experience to give more back to society. Whilst I’d been part of industry bodies covering training and diversity & inclusion and been an official mentor to agency talent, to be honest I hadn’t really got round to doing anything more about it.
So, I was delighted to be contacted regarding a Trustee opportunity with Calibre Audio https://www.calibreaudio.org.uk/
Calibre Audio exists to enrich the life quality and opportunities for people of all age groups with a print disability by providing access to free audio books and content, and to raise awareness of related issues affecting such people. This had personal relevance for me: my father-in-law had suffered from Parkinson’s Syndrome for many years and deterioration of eyesight and concentration meant that he could no longer read as much. Only a staggering 7% of print books are converted to audio, so my younger daughter was recording a book chapter by chapter and sending it to him every few days.
I became a Trustee of Calibre Audio last June and have attended regular meetings ever since. It’s fascinating to work with an organisation that is not primarily commercially oriented and to hopefully be able to bring a contemporary business perspective to help them grow and provide even greater and more diverse content for their members.
So, if you’re looking to expand your horizons and bring some benefit to a community, don’t hold back – being a Trustee brings benefits to an organisation and to you as an individual.
